How Stump Grinding Works

Stump grinding is a method used by arborists to get rid of unsightly tree stumps after a tree has been cut down. Typically, a large tree is taken down in pieces, and the last step is for the stump to be chopped into small bits and ground down to just below surface level. Stump grinding is a cost-effective way to eliminate the look of unsightly stumps on your property.

What is a stump grinder?

A stump grinder is a piece of heavy machinery equipped with a sharp rotating bit on the end. It grinds tree stumps down into wood chips and sawdust. A stump grinder only removes the part of the tree above ground (and slightly below) and does not remove the root system.

How does stump grinding work?

At Arbor Worx, our experts will move the stump grinder on top of the stump and control the circular blade as it chews and rips through the tree trunk. Depending on the thickness of the tree and the hardness of the wood, our team will take the time to make sure the stump is completely ground down.

What happens next?

Stump grinding creates a pile of raw wood material that can be used as mulch, compost, or even as fuel for your backyard fire pit! The stump grinder leaves a shallow hole below the surface of the grass. The hole can be filled with new soil or packed with sawdust. The remaining roots will break down naturally over time.

Is stump grinding better than stump removal?

Stump removal is ideal for smaller trees, trees with weak root systems, and for trees that are far enough away from underground wires, cables, or pipes. Pulling out a tree trunk can be complicated if the roots have grown around those underground features. Grinding is a better option because it’s faster, more affordable, and avoids any possible impact on your home’s electrical, gas or water systems.
